Jockey Jose Santos brought Stay Forever from far back to triumph by 1 1/4-length over Cellars Shiraz in the $350,000 Franks Farm Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Saturday at Gulfstream.
Tenth in the field of 11 most of the way, Santos began to move the 6-year-old Florida-bred mare by Stack on the final turn. She came from sixth in the stretch to blow by Cellars Shiraz and Eibar Coa and win convincingly. Maliziosa, with Patrick Valenzuela aboard, was a neck farther back in third.
Final time for the 1 1/8 mile on turf was 1:47.84.
Stay Forever was bumped at the start but recovered to rally three wide on the final turn. Cellars Shiraz had taken the lead from Bay Street Gal near the quarter pole and drew clear in the stretch, but could not match strides with the winner, hanging on for second.
Owned and bred by Santa Cruz Ranch and trained by Martin Wolfson, Stay Forever collected $210,000 for her sixth win in eight starts while increasing her career earnings to about $339,000.
The 7-2 second choice in the field of 12, Stay Forever paid $9.20, $4.20 and $3.80. Cellars Shiraz, the 2-1 favorite, returned $3.60 and $3. Maliziosa paid $4.20 for the show.
