Churchill Downs is changing the dates of two races on its spring-summer stakes schedule in an effort to coordinate its program with that of Calder Race Course, another track owned by Churchill Downs Inc.
The Aristides Handicap (gr. III), a 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up, is switching dates with the Locust Grove Handicap (gr. IIIT), a filly and mare turf race run at nine furlongs. The Aristides will be run June 21, with the Locust Grove moving to June 28.
The changes were made in order to support Calder's July 12 "Summit of Speed" program. Horses that contest the Aristides now will have an extra week to prepare for the $500,000 Smile Handicap (gr. III) at Calder July 12. Probable sprint champion Orientate swept both races in 2002.
