Alexander Protects Middlebrook Farm With Easement

Helen Alexander has donated a conservation easement to Bluegrass Conservancy which will protect all 349 acres of her Middlebrook Farm, near Lexington. The farm has produced a number of graded stakes winners, including Aldiza, Atelier, and Connected, and is home to champion Queena.

The easement ensures the property remains as farmland in perpetuity. The farm fronts Old Frankfort Pike, which is a designated Kentucky Scenic Byway, and is located along the Town Branch of the Elkhorn Creek. A historic home is also within its boundaries.

A 203-acre piece of property already protected by an easement backs up to Middlebrook, and another 225-acre tract contiguous to the farm is slated to be put into an easement in the near future. Neither of those tracts are owned by Alexander.

Alexander is active in many land preservation and Thoroughbred groups. She is a founding member of the Bluegrass Conservancy, a past board member of the American Farmland Trust, and a steward of The American Jockey Club.

To date the Bluegrass Conservancy holds conservation easements to 2,238 acres in four counties in Central Kentucky.

"This is the first step, a major step, in building a critical mass of land in this area," said Margaret Graves, executive director of the Bluegrass Conservancy.
