With a larger number of horses cataloged and sold, the average price at Barretts Equine Ltd.'s October yearling sale declined. The sales company reported 315 horses were sold during the two-day auction for a gross of $2,702,800. The $8,580 average represented a decline from the $12,720 average last year when 193 horses grossed $2,455,000. This year's median price was $4,200, compared with $6,000 in 1999.

Top price of $105,000 was paid by Jack Carava for an In Excess colt sold during Monday's select session. The colt, produced from the stakes-placed Gone West mare Western Style, was consigned by Berkey Bloodstock Services Inc. During the select session, 75 yearlings averaged $19,545 from a gross of $1,465,900. During the comparable session one year ago, 46 yearlings grossed $1,282,400 for an average price of $27,878.
