Tom Simon's Vinery harvested the top-priced Sunday Silence at the Magic Millions Yearling sale on Australia's Gold Coast. The Vinery principle was present as the son of the deceased champion and unraced Miner's Mark daughter topped the auction at $900,000 (Australian funds).
Consignor of the colt was Strawberry Hill Stud of Magic Millions director John Singleton. Ostensibly acquired for this Queensland sale, the colt was one of two bought from Arrowfield Stud, which had sent a handful of mares to Sunday Silence at Shadai Farms annually until the stallion's death last year. The other Sunday Silence offering from Straberry Hill realized a final $450,000 bid from Brisbane handler Alan Bailey.
The chart-topper aside, the 17th edition of the Magic Millions was dominated by the international sire Danehill. All but three of the 26 on offer from his penultimate Southern Hemisphere crop found new owners at an average $327,609 and median of $320,000. The Danehills contributed more than $7.5 million to the record turnover of $50,114,500.
At $725,000, the dearest Dane was also the most expensive filly of the sale. Adrian Nicoll garnered the well-related first foal filly from the stakes-placed Lake Alexandrina. The BBA-Ireland head was on a mission for fillies as he also signed for Danehills at $700,000 -- for a sister to grade I winner Keeper -- and $450,000.
The four days of selling through January 12 saw this auction reap more than just over $46-million for the first time. The sale average rose just over 8% to a record $92,122. The median advanced by 12.5% over 2002 to $67,500. The major indicator gains were more marginal on the $89,495 average and $65,000 median returned two years ago, but in the current economic climate the figures thrilled the auctioneers and major consignors. Males averaged slightly higher at $94,457 with fillies at $88,261.
Average for 13 from the second Australian crop of the deceased End Sweep was $63,654. They sold to $105,000 with a median of $50,000.
Fasliyev did best of the freshmen sires, returning $111,660 apiece for 25. Six by Real Quiet averaged $70,4176 and 13 by Favorite Trick $50,154.
