Recently retired rider Mike McCarthy won his first race as a trainer Friday at Gulfstream Park with a 3-year-old, Hesa Angel in the first race.Winner of 2,907 races over a 20-year career, McCarthy retired from riding in October after winning the jockey title at Delaware Park. He plans to return to Delaware with his small public stable this year.McCarthy, six times the leading jockey at Delaware Park and twice the leading rider at Philadelphia Park, currently has a 10-horse stable at Palm Meadows training center. Hesa Angel was only the second horse he has saddled at Gulfstream. "Strangely enough, I was never nervous when I rode or won my first race," the 39-year-old McCarthy said. "I can't say the same thing about saddling Hesa Angel. I was very nervous, especially because I thought he had a good chance to win. I'm glad I have that first win behind me now."
