Keeneland January Sale Numbers Dip

Keeneland sold 1,185 horses for $31,186,000 during the five-day January Horses of All Ages Sale that ended on Friday, but total sales average and median were down from 2002.

The average was $26,317 and the median was $10,000 for a combination of broodmares, broodmare prospects, yearlings and horses of various other ages and types.

In 2002, 936 horses brought $34,688,000, an average of $37,060 and a median of $12,750.

Top price of the sale was $475,000 for Belle Nuit, a 13-year-old broodmare who is pregnant to Unbridled's Song. Louis Brooks Ranch LTD bought the chestnut daughter of Dr. Carter out of Belle Noel from Taylor Made Sales Agency.

During Friday's final session, Keeneland sold 224 horses for $1,532,600, an average of $6,842 and a median of $3,750. Maria and William Blase paid the top price of the session, $70,000, for a yearling filly by Down the Aisle out of She's Ok.

Bruce Kline's Spendthrift Farm, as agent, sold the yearling. Down the Aisle's first crop are yearlings this year. He was a grade one stakes winner of more than $1 million during his racing career.
