With the onset of snow in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. region Sunday causing a concern for the safety of horses and riders, officials at Laurel Park opted to cancel live racing after completion of the day's fourth race.
At Charles Town, located in West Virginia about an hour from Baltimore, officials suspended racing after the third race Sunday because of inclement weather.
"There was a lot of snow on the racetrack and you couldn't see very well," said jockey Mario Pino at Laurel. "It was very evident that it was going to continue to snow. We were trying to keep going but even after the first race it was a little hairy."
