Grade II winner Sierra Sunset will stand his first year at stud in 2012 at Tom and Nancy Clark’s Rancho San Miguel near San Miguel, Calif. A fee will be announced later.
Sierra Sunset, a 6-year-old son of Bertrando, broke his maiden as a 2-year-old in his second start by five lengths, running 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.43. That year he also won the Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes by eight lengths and the California Cup Juvenile Stakes.
At 3 at Oaklawn Park, Sierra Sunset captured the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) and ran second in the Southwest Stakes (gr. III). As a 4-year-old he recorded a 101 Beyer Speed Figure when winning the Alamedan Handicap.
Sierra Sunset won at distances from 4 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. He was retired with nine top-three finishes from 14 starts and earnings of $459,696.
Bred in California by Martin and Pan Wygod, Sierra Sunset is out of the stakes-placed Pirate's Bounty mare Toot Sweet, who is a half sister to stakes winner Kaylem Ho, the dam of three stakes winners including grade I winner Private Persuasion. The female family includes 2008 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Da' Tara.
