Sullimar Stable’s homebred Get Stormy , who has remained at Keeneland since his runner-up finish to champion Gio Ponti in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) Oct. 8, turned in his lone work prior to his next start in the Nov. 5 TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) at the Lexington track Oct. 26.
With trainer Tom Bush in attendance, the 5-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic worked five furlongs on the turf in 1:00 4/5 with exercise rider Javier Cabrera aboard.
Clockers caught Get Stormy in splits of :25 1/5, :49 2/5 and galloping out in 1:14 3/5.
“It was just about what we were looking for,” Bush said. “We needed to finish up strong and gallop out and he did. He went the last quarter in :22 and 4/5. That’s good enough. We did what we needed to do.”
Get Stormy, who was fourth in Gio Ponti’s Shadwell Turf Mile in 2010, has followed a similar path to the Breeders’ Cup Mile as he did last year. He finished 11th behind champion Goldikova in 2010. Bush is looking for a better performance this year.
“We think he’s a better horse,” he said. “We were disappointed in the effort last year. We had some issues that we had to deal with after that, with his throat and all. We’re pleased with him. We really are. We think he’s going to run well.”
Bush said Get Stormy would ship to Churchill the morning of Oct. 29 and gallop each morning prior to the race. Garrett Gomez, who rode Get Stormy in the Shadwell Turf Mile, will be aboard again in the Breeders’ Cup.
