Jockey Jerry Bailey met an old acquaintance, the Calder winner's circle, on the final day of 2002, capturing Tuesday's $38,955 Auld Lang Syne Handicap aboard the filly Slews Final Answer.
The victory was Bailey's 67th stakes win of the year, leaving him one shy of the North American record of 68 set By Mike Smith in 1994.
Owned by Live Oak Plantation and trained by Bill Mott, Slews Final Answer won by 5 3/4 lengths over Wish It Were in a time of 1:18.43 for 6 1/2 furlongs. The 3-year-old won for the third time in her last four starts and returned $3.20 for the win.
