Comma to the Top, who swept the Real Quiet and Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) and the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) to earn Horse of the Meet honors last fall signaled his readiness for a return to the races with a bullet five-furlong work in :59 on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park Nov. 13.
Owned by Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, and Kevin Tsujihara, the 3-year-old gelding by Bwana Charlie went to the sidelines after finishing 19th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) in May. “He chipped an ankle and spent 90 days at Bonnie Acres in Hemet before returning to the track,” explained trainer Peter Miller.
The work under Joel Rosario was his seventh since his return. “He’s filled out a little, but he was pretty big to begin with,” said Miller. “He’s a willing horse, a happy horse. He goes out every day and bucks and squeals.”
Miller said Comma to the Top would probably return in the Hollywood Park’s Vernon Underwood Stakes at six furlongs Nov. 26. “He can sprint, he really likes this track, and the timing is perfect for the Malibu (gr. I, Dec. 26 at Santa Anita),” said Miller.
