New Economy Rebounds in La Prevoyante
Four-year-old filly New Economy and local jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr. teamed up at Calder to take the $200,000 La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. IIT) at 12 furlongs on the turf Saturday, part of the Grand Slam II program. Trained by Graham Motion, New Economy was fifth in his previous try on the Calder turf in My Charmer Handicap (gr. IIIT), part of Grand Slam I on Dec. 7, although beaten by just a length. Homeister kept the bay daughter of Red Ransom, a 22-to-1 shot, off the pace for much of the marathon, waiting for the final turn to get the filly into gear to pass pace setters Amelia and Nepenthe. The winner covered the distance in 2:28 2/5 and paid $47.40 to win. Another longshot, Jennasietta, finished second and returned $34.40 for the place. Tweedside was third and paid $8.40 to show."She had such a nice pace going into the turn I thought, 'I know I'm doing fine,' and if I ask her too early, I might not have a big kick," Homeister said. "I just waited and when I got past the five-eighths pole she started to pick it up on her own. By the time we got to the three-eighths she pulled me along ... she knew it was time to go. I was a passenger from there. She did everything on her own."Owned by R.S. Evans, New Economy won for the fifth time in her 14-race career and broke a five-race losing streak. The $120,000 winning purse increased her earnings to $326,687."She ran a great race," said David Rock, Motion's assistant. "I wasn't all that surprised. She ran well last time (fifth in My Charmer) and I think she would have won it with another sixteenth. Certainly the sandy, firm turf helped her today. She definitely prefers harder ground to the softer going she caught at Saratoga this summer."The victory was Homeister's first grade II win. She is currently the sixth leading jockey at the Tropical meeting. The Eclipse Award-winning apprentice rider of 1992, Homeister was the leading jockey of the 1992-93 Tropical season.
