Irish classic winner Gossamer has been retired from racing, according to the Racing Post. The daughter of Sadler's Wells out of the Habitat mare Brocade captured the 2002 Entenmanns Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) and also was group I winner in England as a 2-year-old, taking the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile.
Gossamer raced for her breeder, the late Gerald Leigh, and later for his family. Leigh donated her earnings to the charity CancerBACUP.
Gossamer, whose full brother, Barathea, won the 1993 Irish Guineas, finished fifth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) in her final start, but was beaten only 2 1/4 lengths. She retires with four wins from eight starts and earnings of $480,322. Breeding plans have not been announced.
