Meeker to Address State Legislators in Florida

Churchill Downs Inc. president Tom Meeker will speak to state legislators on regulatory issues facing the pari-mutuel industry during the National Council on Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) winter meeting January 11 in South Beach, Florida.

Meeker's address will follow a panel discussion on slot machines and video lottery terminals at racetracks. State gaming officials along with a representative from academia will explore whether expanded gambling at racetracks truly provides states with any additional revenue.

Florida Senator Steven Geller, president of NCLGS, announced the addition of Meeker to the conference on Monday.

"We are very excited that Meeker will speak to state legislators about regulatory issues facing the pari-mutuel industry and their potential impact on state revenues and economic development," Geller said through a statement. "His leadership in racing and his current position as president and CEO of Churchill Downs provide a unique perspective from which to offer insight on gaming regulation and the future of racing."

The conference will be held from Jan. 10-12 at the Shelborne Beach Resort. Also on the agenda is a legislative roundtable on state budgets and gaming issues; committee meetings on state lotteries, pari-mutuel wagering integrity, and state-federal regulations; as well as two other general sessions to focus on timely gaming issues.

In a panel discussion titled "Update: Gaming 101," state legislators, regulators, and gaming experts will touch on a variety of topic, including: issues facing the pari-mutuel industry, the latest information on state and federal casino regulation, operations of state lotteries, Indian and Internet gaming, and riverboat gaming.

Sen. Geller said the NCLGS does not oppose or endorse gambling but was created to provide state legislators with information from all sides of gaming issues.
