Horatio Karamanos has been named 2002 Jockey of the Year in his native Argentina."It is a tremendous honor," said Karamanos, who was one of Argentina's top riders for a decade before moving his tack to South Florida in 2001. "This is the third time I've been nominated but my success in Maryland put me over the top."The 29-year old relocated to Maryland in March and will finish the year as the third-leading rider. He won the Laurel Park riding title this summer and tied the Laurel track record by riding seven winners on October 26. "I am still adjusting the riding style here in the states but I improved my win total by about 100 and for a beginner that's not too bad," added Karamanos. "My business here is excellent and I'm looking forward to next year."For the year he ranks 21st in the nation with 233 victories (165 in Maryland) and is in the top 50 in earnings with $4,989,376.
