An increase in pari-mutuel handle has led Gulfstream Park to raise purses 15% through the end of its meet, which concludes April 8.
Officials at the Florida racetrack said Feb. 29 that handle is up at the facility and through other outlets that take the Gulfstream signal.
Through 59 days, purses at Gulfstream have averaged $386,261 a day, according to The Jockey Club Information Systems. Field size has been large at 9.4 horses per race.
“We have seen increases in our business due to the support of our horsemen, and the industry has benefited from our December opening,” Gulfstream president and general manager Tim Ritvo said. “The quality of our races, and the quantity of starters per race, has been welcomed by our fans both locally and globally.”
The purse increase should put average daily purses in the $440,000 range.
The $1 million Florida Derby (gr. I) is scheduled for March 31 at Gulfstream.
