Tranquility Lake led all the way under jockey Eddie Delahoussaye to win the $500,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes (gr. IT) by a length over Spanish Fern Saturday at Santa Anita. Over firm turf, Tranquility Lake completed the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.98 after running the final quarter-mile in :22.63 seconds.
Tranquility Lake and Delahoussaye ran each of the opening three quarter-miles in over :25 seconds before quickening in the final half-mile en route to the win.
"She went nice and easy today," said Delahoussaye. "She was nice and relaxed, and on the last turn she started to pick it up on her own. I just let her do her own thing."
Polaire finished third, 3/4 lengths behind Spanish Fern. Mynah, Caffe Latte, and Alexine completed the order of finish.
Victor Espinoza, jockey of Spanish Fern, thought his horse ran well but complained, "the pace was too slow. It was almost impossible for us to win because of the pace."
The race marked Tranquility Lake's first race in a grade I since finishing last of seven in last year's Yellow Ribbon. In that race, she was caught in a pace duel early on (the six furlong fraction was 1:10 4/5, over five seconds slower than the 1:16 3/5 she was allowed to run Saturday) before tiring through the stretch.
The win is her third in as many starts on the year. Previously she won the Palomar Handicap (gr. IIIT) and Royal Heroine Stakes. Tranquility Lake (Rahy -- Winters' Love, by Danzig) is a 5-year-old mare trained by Julio Canani for Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod. She was bred in Kentucky by North Central Bloodstock. She earned $300,000 for the win, her eighth in 18 starts.
Canani said Tranquility Lake would train up to the Breeders' Cup Fillies and Mares Turf (gr. IT) in California and ship to Kentucky a couple of days before the race. "You spend too much time in another scenario and you get sick," said Canani. "I do my homework at home and that's what I did last year." (Chart, Equibase
