Officials at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino and sales administrator Stemmans Inc. announced that 134 juveniles--the same number as in 2011--have been cataloged for the John Franks Memorial 2-year-old in training sale at Evangeline.
The sale, now in its 10th year, is scheduled for March 25, beginning at 10 a.m. CDT. It will be held in the Evangeline Downs Event Center, which is located directly adjacent to the racing paddock. In addition, there will be a preview gallop show March 24, at noon. Both the sale and the preview gallop show are free and open to the public.
“This sale has become a must-attend for horsemen who not only race here in south-central Louisiana, but throughout Louisiana and the neighboring states,” said Charlotte Stemmans Clavier, president of Stemmans, in a release. “This year’s catalog will once again feature predominately registered Louisiana-bred horses, including eight offspring of sires Richter Scale and Toolightoquit, as well as a sprinkling of youngsters that were bred in both Kentucky and Florida.
“Last year’s sale featured a total of 113 2-year-olds after 21 were withdrawn that sold for a total of $901,500 and an average of $7,978,” she added. "With what we feel is a very attractive catalog for buyers to choose from, we are optimistic of surpassing those totals.”
As in past years, the sale, named for the late Eclipse Award-winning owner/breeder, offers a pair of $60,000 races to be held at Evangeline Downs that are restricted to 2-year-olds that pass through the sales ring. The two events, previously contested in late July, will now be held Sept. 8, and run at the distance of 5 ½ furlongs on the main track.
