The Turf Publicists of America have named trainer Ken McPeek and his wife, Sue, the 2002 winners of the Big Sport of Turfdom Award.
The award is presented annually to a person who enhances coverage of Thoroughbred racing through corporation with the media and Thoroughbred racing publicists. The McPeeks are the second husband-and-wife team to receive the award. Bob and Beverly Lewis won it in 1995.
"Throughout the year, and especially in the months leading up and including the Triple Crown, Ken and Sue consistently made themselves available to a wide range of media representatives," said Bob Curran, Jr., president of the TPA. "They did so through good times and bad and we're proud to honor them with this well-deserved award."
On the racetrack, McPeek-trained horses won approximately 80 races and over $6.4 million in purses. The highlight of the year was Sarava's victory in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), but McPeek runners also won the Florida Derby, the Blue Grass Stakes, both grade I, and the grade II Louisiana Derby.
Among his 2002 stakes winners were Repent, Harlan's Holiday, Take Charge Lady, and Minister's Baby.
The Big Sport of Turfdom Award will be presented at a luncheon on Jan. 27 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
