George Weaver, Former Pletcher Assistant, Saddles First Winner
George Weaver, who served as assistant trainer for Todd Pletcher fox six years, saddled his first winner on Dec. 5 when Peachtree Stable's First Spear scored a head victory in an optional claiming race at Calder. The 5-year-old son of Dare and Go was entered for a $40,000 claiming tag.Weaver, who also worked under Pletcher for six years when Pletcher was D. Wayne Lukas' assistant, is married to another former Pletcher assistant, Cindy Hutter, and the couple had their first child, a son, Ben, on Sept. 23.Weaver began accepting horses on his own on Nov. 1 and scored his first victory on his third try. He currently is training 15 horses and will be based this winter at Palm Meadows, about 45 minutes from Gulfstream."It was a great feeling to win my first race," Weaver said. "I'm very grateful to Mr. (John) Fort (president of Peachtree Stable) for letting me work with this horse."First Spear has won five of 21 career starts for earnings of $212,510. He captured the listed Lamplighter Handicap at Monmouth and Budweiser Challenge Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in 2001, and placed in three other stakes.
