Milton J. "Laddie" Dance, who raced champion and millionaire Lemon Drop Kid with wife Jeanne Vance, died Nov. 28 at age 76.
Dance, who was born in Baltimore, worked as an auctioneer at Fasig-Tipton for 40 years starting in 1948. He and Vance were married in 1965 and initially operated a commercial breeding outfit in the name of Taylor's Purchase Farm. Their big horse, Lemon Drop Kid, came along in the 1990s. The son of Kingmambo ended the Triple Crown threat of Charismatic by winning the 1999 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Lemon Drop Kid was a grade I winner all three years he raced and currently stands at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky.
In addition to his wife, Dance's survivors include several children and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Chestnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Md., Dec. 5 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Milton J. Dance Jr., Head and Neck Rehabilitation Center at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, 6701 North Charles Street Baltimore, Md. 21204 would be appreciated.
