Giant's Causeway canters to post for the Coral Eclipse Stakes in July.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien confirmed Saturday that Giant's Causeway likely will make his next start in the 1 1/4-mile Champion Stakes at Newmarket Oct. 14 as a prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic. O'Brien had considered sending the son of Storm Cat to Belmont for the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but decided to keep him at home.
"The Classic is what we've been working toward," O'Brien told The Blood-Horse
. "We decided the best way to get there is either run in the Champion Stakes or go to the Classic off works. But the horse is doing so well, and he looks like he wants another race. He tries all the time and loves racing so much we have to run him to keep him competitive.
O'Brien attributes Giant's Causeway's second-place finish the recent Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, which ended a streak of five consecutive Group I victories, to the fact that he never saw the winner, who rallied late with a wide run. "He usually goes to the front very easily, then comes on again when he's challenged," O'Brien said. "But in his last start, he went to the front easier than ever and never saw the winner."
