Suffolk Downs Jockey Has 23-Day Win Streak
Edited from track notesJoe Hampshire Jr., the fourth leading rider in North America with 282 wins on the year, will attempt to win a race for the 23rd consecutive day when Suffolk Downs resumes live racing on Saturday.Hampshire, the leading rider at Suffolk Downs the last five meets, began his winning streak on October 22 with a victory aboard Deer Danny Boy for trainer Ned Allard and owner Peter Fuller.Hampshire has won multiple races on nine separate days during what is being called "The Streak" by the Boston media.The 39-year-old Philadelphia native is well off the record of 64 consecutive days set by Chris Antley in 1989, but he does have a few angles working in his favor.Hampshire rides first call for trainer Ron Dandy, who has won 141 races this year to rank as the eighth leading trainer in North America.In addition, Suffolk Downs races four days a week. The Autumn meet concludes on December 23 before the track kicks off the Spring meet on January 1.The compacted racing schedule, in conjunction with live mounts, should ensure Hampshire opportunities to extend the streak."The streak is a lot of fun," said Hampshire.
