The gross of 3,293,400 guineas ($5,462,022) bettered the previous mark set in 1996 and represented an 88% increase over last year's total. The average of 20,204 guineas ($33,508) was up by 19%. Six yearlings brought six-figure prices compared to only two in 2001.

The record-setting sale topper, a Spectrum filly named Greek Island, was purchased for 360,000 guineas ($597,051) by Irish agent Demi O'Byrne, a member of the Coolmore Stud Team. Consigned by Kildaragh Stud, as agent for Ballymacoll Stud Farm, Greek Island was produced from the 20-year-old Ela-Mana-Mou mare Gay Hellene, who captured the 1985 Prix de Flore (Fr-III). Greek Island is a half-sister to Nash Terrace (by Nashwan), winner of the 1996 Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs, and Landing Light (by In the Wings), a multiple stakes winner over hurdles in England. Greek Island is also a half-sister to Athene (by Rousillon), the dam of French group III winner Side Saddle. Other prominent members of the record-setting filly's family include Gaily, Pilsudski, and Spearfish.
