Mike Mitchell, recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor, is doing well and is in fine spirits, according to his assistant trainer, Phil D’Amato, who visited the longtime Southern California conditioner July 3.
Mitchell, 64, was released from the hospital July 2. The surgery was performed June 29.
“You wouldn’t have known he’d had any kind of operation, let alone brain surgery,” said D’Amato. “He was cracking jokes and was as sharp as ever. We went over every horse in the barn and planned out their schedules. Right now, he’s planning to come out (to Betfair Hollywood Park) to watch some horses breeze this weekend (July 7-8).”
Mitchell is still awaiting results of a biopsy on the tumor.
A day after his surgery, D'Amato saddled the Mitchell-trained Camp Victory to win the Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) in an upset at Hollywood.
