A Nov. 18 hearing by the New Jersey Economic Growth Committee on legislation to authorize slot machines at Meadowlands ended early because the sponsor, Sen. Joseph Suliga, is still in the process of making changes to the bill.
Some of those changes include expanding slots to other racetracks in the state, allowing the Casino Control Commission to be in charge of the machines, and allowing a percentage of the revenue to go toward purses.
Before it concluded, the hearing deteroriated into a heated debate between Suliga and Sen. William Gormley, who charged the bill would never make it out of committee, and that slots at racetracks would threaten the 50,000 jobs generated by the casino industry in New Jersey.
