Silver Squire Heads Huntington Cast
Owned by Cherry Martin, Silver Squire enters the Huntington off a remarkable 33-length victory over seven others in an entry-level allowance race at Aqueduct on Oct. 25. That made him 3-for-3 in sprint races."He's a very good horse," said Kimmel of Silver Squire. "He came out of that race and worked a beautiful five-eighths in 1:00 4/5 (on Nov. 9). I think he'll eventually stretch out, but he'll have to show us how far he wants to go."
In his only distance effort, in the 1 1/16-mile Belmont Futurity (gr. I), Silver Squire, off at 9-2, stumbled badly at the start and lost all chance.
"His front and back legs actually splayed and he landed on his belly," jockey Richard Migliore said. "I was so close to the ground. I thought he was going to roll over. Somehow he got up. I think he scared himself. He was really running panicky for the first eighth of a mile. He wasn't picking it up when we got to the far turn and I thought he'd hurt himself. I kind of just galloped him around there after that."
But they came back with the big allowance win.
"He was very good," Migliore said. "His biggest asset is he can settle and make a run. Most 2-year-olds have some early speed and they compromise each other's chances. He gets into a great rhythm and waits until you tell him to go. He's always been an intelligent horse."
Silver Squire drew the rail in the Huntington and should get a decent pace to attack with the likes of Super Fuse, Gators N Bears, American Mon and First Blush in the race.
C T Stable's Super Fuse, undefeated in three starts at Calder, has trained all week over Aqueduct's main track and will make his New York debut in the Huntington for trainer Richard Ciardullo Jr. A winner of three of four career starts, Super Fuse virtually went gate to wire in winning Calder's Birdonthewire in his last start Oct. 12. $75,000-added Sunday's Huntington Stakes, 6 furlongs, 2-year-olds:
