Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey, nearing the end of a potentially record-breaking year with nearly $22 million in purse earnings and 60 stakes victories, rides in all six races of Saturday's Florida Million program at Calder Race Course.
Bailey is bidding to break his earnings mark of $22,857,720 set last year, and he is in position to pass Mike Smith's mark of 67 stakes victories set in 1994.
His mounts Saturday include two for longtime client Bill Mott (Miesque's Approval and Tonight's Wager), two for Eddie Plesa, Jr. (Best of the Rest and Running Debate) and one each for Christopher Paasch (Mighty David) and Tom Proctor (Unleash the Power).
Bailey, 45, has plenty of experience over the years at Calder and early in his career won three Tropical-at-Calder meet riding titles ('77-'78, '78-'79 and '80-'81 (in a tie). He still ranks eighth among all-time riders of winners (281) at Tropical and fourth in stakes victories (17).
In his last trip to Calder for the Festival of the Sun on Oct. 12, the native Texan won a stakes with Texas Glitter in the Calder Turf Sprint for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Bailey will not be the only leading horseman competing on Saturday's Florida Million card as trainer Scott Lake runs Richard Englander's 3-year-old My Cousin Matt in the Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap.
Lake will be making his South Florida training debut with the Matty G. gelding, an $85,000 claim two races back at Belmont. Lake led the North American trainers' standings for winners last year with 406 and currently leads Steve Asmussen this season (345-334 through Tuesday).
Englander, too, is a national leader as an owner with 246 wins through Wednesday, 48 more than Michael Gill in second-place.
