For the first time Remington Park will be running a mixed Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred meet in 2003.

The decision to add a mixed meet from July 25- Aug. 17 was approved by the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission Thursday. The idea of the new format was brought to the commission by Remington Park, the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, and the Oklahoma Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association.

The Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse mixed meet will be second of two mixed meets, also a first for Remington Park. The new format is a compromise pursued by Remington's which was appealing 2003 racing dates set by commission last month. The commission had ordered Remington to run a mixed meet but without Thoroughbreds.

"From the horsemen I've talked to, most are elated that we have struck a compromise that will give them more of an opportunity to run their horse in Oklahoma," said Debbie Schauf, executive director of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association.

The new proposal calls for a Quarter Horse, Paint, and Appaloosa meet to run 13 days from June 27-July 20 and a second mixed meet, including Thoroughbreds, lasting 12 days, from July 25-Aug. 17. The 57-day straight Thoroughbred meet will run from Aug. 22-Nov. 30.

"This new agreement will provide the opportunity to see what may work best for Oklahoma racing," said Gordon Hare, executive director of the Oklahoma Racing Commission. "In my opinion, I believe a mixed meet will work best for Oklahoma and this region. It just makes sense."
