Big Losses Reported at Two Prairie Meadows Meets

Prairie Meadows suffered big decreases in handle and attendance at its Thoroughbred and mixed meets. The Altoona, Iowa, track reported a staggering 29% drop in total handle following its Thoroughbred/Quarter horse meet ending Sept. 30. Off-track wagering on Prairie Meadows races took the biggest hit, falling 35% from $20.9 million in 1999 to $13.5 million this year. On-track wagering dropped 7.5% to an average $64,090 per day. Attendance for the meet, which runs 60% Thoroughbred races, fell more than 14%. The numbers released recently for the April 21 to July 5 Thoroughbred meet were not much better. Average daily attendance fell 13% to 9,710 and on-track wagering fell 5% to average daily handle of $92,508. Off-track wagering also suffered during the Thoroughbred meet falling 16%.
