NYRA to Stop Wagering Early at Simulcast Sites

The New York Racing Association will stop accepting wagers from its simulcast outlets when the first horse enters the starting gate, beginning with the opening of the inner track meeting at Aqueduct on December 4.

"This insures that virtually all money wagered off track will be in our system before the start of each race," said Barry K. Schwartz, NYRA chairman. "We made a formal request to Autotote (NYRA's totalisator vendor) last week and the new software needs to be coded, installed and tested before we can move forward with this measure. We have been told this process will take three weeks."

Wagering will remain open on track at Aqueduct until the start of the race. At the current Aqueduct meeting, approximately 11.3 percent of handle is generated on track. On-track bets are processed in real time.

"I discussed this policy with Mike Hoblock (chairman of the New York State Racing and Wagering Board) and he agreed that this was the best course of action to take at this time," said Schwartz.
