Fort Erie Concludes Live Meet

Fort Erie concluded its 2002 live season with an increase in everything from handle to purse amounts to the number of races conducted.

All association wagering at Fort Erie increased 4.1% ($3.8 million), while the on-track handle bettered the 2001 season by 1.1%. The track conducted 1,155 races with total purses distributed totaling $21,873,400, an increase of 17% over last year. The average field size at Fort Erie in 2002 featured eight runners.

Taking individual honors were Martin Ramirez, who captured the rider's title, winning 127 races and earning over $2.1 million in purses. Kristopher Robinson was the leading apprentice with 73 victories. Layne Giliforte earned his fifth consecutive training title at Fort Erie. He won 79 races, while earning more than $1.3 million. For the sixth time, Bruno Schickedanz was the leading owner with 32 winners.

Live racing returns to Fort Erie April 26 and will run through Nov. 11.
