Determined Buffalo Jump Wins Glorious Song

While trainer Josie Carroll questioned how Buffalo Jump would handle an off track, she got the answer she was hoping for in Sunday's $164,750 Glorious Song Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine.

Sent off at odds of 7-1, the lone Canadian-bred filly in the six-horse field fended off a stubborn Dolly Dynamite to win over a main track rated as "good."

"This filly has tried hard every time and has been the bridesmaid before," said Carroll, in reference to Buffalo Jump's runner-up finishes in the Ontario Debutante and Fanfreluche Stakes. "I'm delighted with her. She was just due."

Neblina outran Winter Garden for the early lead in :22.28.
Dolly Dynamite, with Jim McAleney aboard, made a strong move to the inside, capturing the lead just before the half-mile (:45.15) mark.

Patrick Husbands, who had kept Buffalo Jump just back of the pacesetting trio, had no choice but to take the chestnut four-wide prior to the final turn.

"The game plan going into this race was to get her relaxed," said Husbands, who now has 12 stakes triumphs on the year. "She came to the quarter-pole good, switched her leads good, but then she fell apart the last eighth of a mile.
"Down the lane is a little bit of a problem now."

After assuming command from Dolly Dynamite in mid-stretch, Buffalo Jump had to battle for every inch of ground, crossing the wire a neck in front in a time of 1:24.22.

While it may take a bit more seasoning to perfect her talents, Carroll was certainly pleased with the daughter of Benny the Dip's ability to turn back the compeition on this day.

"She doesn't like to open up, she loves to dig in and be beside another horse," noted Carroll, of the Eaton Hall Farm-owned filly. "But she was game once again."

The victory, worth $110,850, boosts Buffalo Jump's bankroll to $224,820.

She paid $17.10, $6.70 and $3.70 across the board, combining with Dolly Dynamite ($4.60, $3.30) for a $101.80 exacta. Smart Angel ($2.60), coupled with Neblina, held for third.
