Horse Racing Alberta on Friday offered a 10-year racetrack license extension to Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alberta. The extension takes effect Jan. 1, 2004.

"A key component to the renewal was the solidification of Alberta's principal racing venues and the development of high-quality horse racing facilities," said Dr. Pat Brennan, HRA racetrack license committee chair.

Dr. David Reid, chairman of HRA, added, "The HRA acknowledges the 100-plus years of contribution by Northlands Park to the horse racing industry, and has agreed with Northlands Park's vision with respect to the future of horse racing in the province."

At the same time, HRA announced that it was not prepared to offer a long term racetrack license for the Calgary market area at this time.

"There was a high degree of interest in the Calgary market area, however none of the applicants, in the committee's opinion, could meet the minimum standards established by the industry for the granting of a long term racetrack license," said Brennan.

Reid added that the parties who participated in the process would be asked to reconsider and resubmit applications in 2003.
