A smaller crowd mixed with a smaller catalogue resulted in smaller returns at the sixth annual Adena Springs Broodmare Sale on Nov. 7 at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks near Lexington.
Fifty-eight of the 61 catalogued in-foal mares were offered without reserves, and each were a part of a package that included a no-guarantee season to a selected Adena Springs stallion for 2003. The 58 mares grossed $1,079,400 for an average of $18,610. The median price was $10,000.
Last year, 75 of the 77-catalogued hips averaged $40,940, with a median of $29,000. The 2001 sale grossed $3,070,500. In 2000, 64 mares grossed $3,649,000, with an average of $57,016.
Topping the 2002 sale was the stakes winning mare Way Up (Great Above -- Shamsheer, by Marshua's Dancer). The 9-year-old mare brought a top bid of $95,0000 from Tom Bachman, owner of Pegasus Ranch near Petaluma, Calif.
Pegasus Ranch is home to Adena stallions Helmsman and Wild Gold.
Way Up was sold in foal to Awesome Again with a 2003 season to Touch Gold. She has a weanling El Prado filly.
"She is just a hard running -stakes mare that was offered in foal to a good stallion and came with a season to another good stallion. This is a very good place to pick up quality mares at reasonable prices. I have been a huge supporter of this sale since its beginning," Bachman said.
Bachman said Way Up would foal in California and the Touch Gold season would be used on one of his other 12 broodmares.
The second highest price of the night was the Irish Open mare Irish Cherry who was bid up to $80,000 by Toronto, Ontario, Canada resident Ted Burnett. Irish Cherry sold in foal to Wild Rush with a 2003 season to Awesome Again.
Burnett said Irish Cherry would foal in Canada. He plans to sell the foal.
