When Twenty Hawks crossed the line first in the $50,925 West Virginia Governor's Cup at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on the night of Oct. 19, it not only gave the gelding the richest win of his career, but also provided locally based trainer Ronney Brown the 2,000th victory of his career (VIDEO) .
Jose Montano was aboard Twenty Hawks for Brown and owner Kyle Yost. Twenty Hawks, a California-bred 5-year-old by Unusual Heat, edged pacesetter Working Man Blues by a neck in the 1 1/8-mile event.
It's believed that Brown is only the third trainer to record his 2,000 victory at Charles Town, joining Robert Hilton and Jeff Runco.
Brown has been training horses for over 27 years and won his first race with Shy Bo at Charles Town in 1986. He has finished in the top 100 in the country in wins nine times over the course of his career.
"I just feel lucky to be here," said Brown. "I don't even really know what to say. My staff and all my owners and the track itself have been good to me over the years."
