Seattle Slew Sires Top-Priced Keeneland Weanling; Fusaichi Pegasus Colt Brings $725,000
Keeneland was buzzing about the first weanlings from Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus and European Horse of the Year Giant's Causeway. But a veteran stallion was in the spotlight Monday during the first session of the November breeding stock sale. The late Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew sired the top-priced weanling, an $800,000 colt out of the unraced Seeking the Gold mare Zoe Montana. John Ferguson, the bloodstock manager for Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai, purchased the colt from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The colt was bred by Dean Greenwood, a venture involving Dean Grimm, son of Payson Stud's Virginia Kraft Payson; actor Woody Harrelson; and New Jersey accountants Jon and Len Green. The colt's dam, Zoe Montana, is from the family of English champion Half a Year and the grade II winner and successful stallion Event of the Year (by Seattle Slew).fA Fusaichi Pegasus colt brought $725,000, the second-highest price for a weanling. Irish bloodstock agent John McCormack purchased him from Three Chimneys Sales, agent. McCormack declined to identify his client, but said the colt would be resold at public auction as a yearling, probably in this country."It's hard not to get excited by him," said McCormack of Fusaichi Pegasus. "A Derby winner by Mr. Prospector, he captures the imagination so far. I've seen some nice foals, and they all seem to look like him. You've got to believe he's got every chance (to be successful as a sire)."Two other weanlings by Fusaichi Pegasus were sold. A filly out of Mamselle Bebette brought $55,000 while a colt out of Heraklia brought $500,000.Two weanlings by Giant's Causeway were sold. A filly out of Saralea brought $105,000 while a filly out of Heavenely Calm brought $125,000.
