Kimberlite Pipe Ends Slump In Carey Handicap

Canadian invader Kimberlite Pipe went gate-to-wire Saturday to capture the $150,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (gr. III) at Hawthorne by a half-length.

The 6-year-old son son of Take Me Out skipped along to fractions of :23.95 and 47.21, en route to a winning time of 1:35.94 for the one-mile test on the turf.

Ridden by Christophe Emigh, the winner held off the rallying Aslaaf, who was a half-length in front of Major Omansky, who was stalking Kimberlite Pipe. Favored Mystery Giver was eighth.

Kimberlite Pipe, who had not hit the board in five previous starts this year, is owned by John D. Gunther and trained by Michael Wright Jr.

Kimberlite Pipe paid $18.20, $8.20 and $8. Aslaaf returned $8 and $7. Major Omansky paid $14.20.
