A Mark Casse-trained son of Smart Strike, Added Edge had previously won all three starts at Woodbine, including the Silver Deputy and the Swynford. The Nashua was his first start beyond seven furlongs, and he was an easy 2 ¼-length winner in 1:36 3/5 under jockey Patrick Husbands.
According to Barry Irwin of Team Valor, Added Edge was pointing for the $200,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at 1 1/8 mile Nov. 30 before the race, but that plan has changed."This is what we were hoping for today," Irwin said. "He doesn't look like a good horse and he doesn't move like a good horse, but he is a good horse. This horse really wants to run a mile and an eighth right now, but we don't want to let him go that far because he's too young. We're going to send him down to Florida, give him a month off and get him ready for the Florida Derby (in March, 2003).
Added Edge sat off favored Boston Bull's fractions of :23 2/5; :46 4/5 and 1:11 1/5, before rallying in the middle of the lane for the victory. Boston Bull, winner of the Cowdin (gr. III) in the slop last month at Belmont, was beaten a half-length for place by Outer Reef.Added Edge earned $65,820 for his fourth straight victory, boosting his career earnings total to $250,328. He returned $7.60, $6 and $2.10. Runner-up Outer Reef paid $6.90 and $2.10. Favored at 4-5, Boston Bull was third and paid $2.10.
"Watching the races the last couple of days, speed really hasn't done any good and that was our biggest concern coming in," said Boston Bull's trainer, Todd Pletcher. " I thought he ran a credible race. Johnny [Velazquez, jockey] said he was a little green. This was his first time over the track here and maybe he was seeing things for the first time. I think we might try the Remsen."Roaring Fever, Wacky For Love, Formidable Fox and Areyouamused trailed.Einar Robsham's Pretty Wild was scratched from the Nashua because of a bone chip in his right knee that requires surgery, according to trainer Stanley Hough.(Chart, Equibase)
