When it comes to shockers, there aren't many better than Mulrainy, the 3-year-old bay who'll run in this Sunday's $150,000-added Jammed Lovely Stakes at Woodbine.
Winning at long odds is becoming a bit of a trademark for the Wings of Erin Farm filly. After cruising to a 2 ¾-length score in the Duchess Stakes on August 10 at 15-1, Mulrainy shrugged off a second-place finish as the favorite in the Algoma Stakes, gutting out a neck win at 8-1 in the La Lorgnette on Sept. 28.
This time, at least prior to when the gates open, Mulrainy finds herself in somewhat unfamiliar territory as the morning favorite at 2-1.
"She ran like a champ," said regular rider Chantal Sutherland, in the irons for all three of the aforementioned added-money events. "Mulrainy's really funny, though. You can never tell how much she's got left."
Sutherland, currently third in the Woodbine rider standings, has watched the daughter of Star de Naskra blossom into a consistent performer, including four-straight top-three finishes.
This weekend's seven-furlong main track event for 3-year-old fillies will hardly be a cakewalk with a field that includes Heyahohowdy, Brass In Pocket and Spanish Decree.
Sutherland, however, has faith in her filly's abilities.
"She's very talented and she's getting better and better with each race," he said. "In her last race (La Lorgnette), she showed a lot of courage to get up for the win."
The Jammed Lovely is the finale of a stakes trio on Sunday, a 10-race card which also features the River Memories Stakes (fourth race) and Labeeb Stakes (sixth race). $150,000-added Jammed Lovely, 7 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies
