Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti's Rose to Gold held off the determined run of fellow Calder shipper Touch Magic to take Saturday's Grade 3, $500,000 Delta Downs Princess by a half-length under jockey Paco Lopez. The Friends Lake juvenile miss was sent off the 5-2 second choice and paid $7.60, $5.60 and $4.60 while finishing the two-turn, fast-track mile in 1:39 1/5.
Rose to Gold settled down on the rail before Lopez angled her out as Unhedged and Salamera began dueling on the front end nearing the first turn. The filly quickly moved up to be third while racing between horses on the backstretch as the leaders set splits of :23 2/5, :48 4/5 and 1:13 4/5.
Unhedged and Salamera began fading rounding the final turn but Rose to Gold took off while three wide. The chestnut miss dug in during the short stretch run and gutted out the decision over a tenacious Touch Magic.
Sittin at the Bar got the best of Madame Cactus by 2 1/2 lengths to take third after finishing second to that rival in the My Trusty Cat, the local prep for the Delta Downs Princess, on October 19. Grade 2-placed stakes winner Salamera was a neck farther back while Unhedged, Floral Sky, Cayllano and Cloudy in Sandiego completed the order of finish.
Rose to Gold captured her initial two races by a total 26 1/2 lengths while competing against stakes company in the Lindsay Frolic and Brave Raj at Calder. Trainer Sal Santoro shipped her to Keeneland for her next start in the Grade 1 Alcibiades, but the chestnut filly showed a clear dislike for the synthetic Polytrack when finishing 12th in that contest.
Returning to a conventional dirt surface in the Delta Downs Princess, Rose to Gold got back on the winning track while running her career record to 4-3-0-0, $372,889.
Bred in Kentucky by Joe Sr., Joe Jr., John and Karen Mulholland, Rose to Gold was a bargain when selling for only $1,400 as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed yearling then RNAing at $10,000 last August as an OBS yearling.
She is out of the unraced Tabasco Cat mare Saucy, who counts as a full brother multiple Grade 2-placed winner Sun Cat. Rose to Gold's fourth dam is Group 3 queen El Mina, whose descendants include Group 1 star Caitano, Group 2 hero Utmost Respect and Group 3 scorers El Fabulous, Steppe Dancer, St Mawes and Artic Envoy.
