Bob and Beverly Lewis' colt breezed following the mid-session break for track maintenance and covered four furlongs in :48 under exercise rider Kevin Wiley. The move was the fastest of 48 at the distance."We wanted to go today because the timing was good and the track was in great shape," said Byrne. "He handles an 'off' track and it was an uneventful move. I got him in :48 and he galloped out an easy five-eighths, so he's ready to run." Private Gold won the Ellis Park Juvenile and was runner-up to eventual Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Vindication in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. III) at Turfway Park before he turned in a dull sixth-place effort behind Sky Mesa in the Lane's End Breeders Futurity (gr. II) at Keeneland. Also working over the sloppy track toward a planned start in the Iroquois was Heiligbrodt Racing Stable's Kentucky Breeders' Cup (gr. III) winner Posse, who breezed five furlongs in company with his 3-year-old stablemate Easyfromthegitgo. Both horses completed the distance in an easy 1:03.60 with jockey Donnie Meche in the irons aboard Posse and Lisa Orn aboard Easyfromthegitgo.
The Steve Asmussen-trained Posse has not competed since a fourth-place finish to Whywhywhy in the Sanford (gr. II) at Saratoga on July 25. "We ran him opening week at Saratoga and he came back a little sick," said Asmussen. "We gave him some time and he's got plenty of races in him and a lot of seasoning. He's come up really well and we expect another good performance.
Another Iroquois contender on the track was Elmer Miller's What a Bad Day. The Carl Nafzger-trained colt breezed five furlongs in 1:01.80 -- the fourth fastest of 24 moves at the distance. The son of Dehere finished last of 10 in his debut at Saratoga, but has won two races since then at Turfway Park and Keeneland by a combined margin of 13 1/2 lengths.
