The Barretts fall mixed sale posted significant across-the-board increases in its key business figures during the opening session Monday at Fairplex Park in Southern California. Compared to a year ago, the number sold and gross revenue rose by 18.3% and 80.7%, respectively. The average and median soared by 52.7% and 23.1%, respectively.
The 213 horses sold grossed $1,604,800 and averaged $7,534. The median was 4,000. In 2001, 180 horses were sold for a gross of $887,900, an average of $4,933, and a median of $3,250.
Picturesque Lady, an 8-year-old daughter of Devil's Bag, brought the top price of $110,000. Consigned by Betty Mabee's Golden Eagle Farm, the mare, who is in foal to Event of the Year, was purchased by Paula Capestro. Picturesque Lady is a half-sister to added-money winners Ladies Cruise (by Fappiano), Lady Pastor (by Flying Paster), Young and Daring (by Woodman), and Young Flyer (by Flying Paster).
The buy-back rate increased from 17.8% last year to 20.5% this year.
