Handle Up, Crowds Good at Arlington International

Arlington International Racecourse, will run from June 11-Oct. 30 in 2001.
Arlington International Racecourse reported a significant increase in handle and solid attendance following its 103-day meet. Total handle from all sources increased 10.7% to $333,177,106, up from a total handle of $300.9 million reported in 1997, which is when Arlington last ran a live meet. Last year, Arlington's dates were run at Hawthorne Race Course.

The average daily attendance of 6,709 was essentially unchanged from 1997's average daily attendance of 6,763. Total on-track handle also kept pace with 1997. On-track wagers totaled $65,679,350 compared to $65,920,323 wagered in 1997.

Arlington did increase interest in Illinois races both in state and out of state. Wagering on Illinois races from out of state this year was 79% higher than last year and 44% higher than 1997. Average daily out-of-state handle on Arlington races was $2,165,903 compared to 1997's average daily out-of-state handle of $1,477,735. Wagering throughout Illinois also increased significantly. During the Arlington meet, Illinois' average daily handle was $2,716,869 or 9% higher than last year when the average daily handle during this time was $2,523,204.
