Came Home, who will be one of the favorites for the Breeders' Cup Classic, had his final tuneup for the $4 million race, working a half-mile in :47 3/5 at Santa Anita Tuesday.
Gonzalez said before the work he was looking for around :48, and as was the case in the colt's last two works, he got just what he wanted.
Working in the darkness at 6:40 a.m., the son of Gone West galloped out his 5 furlongs in 1:02 1/5, with exercise rider Danny Benitez up.
"That was perfect," Gonzalez said. "It was just what I was looking for. He did it very, very easy. That's what I wanted. I had Danny work him because he was working a short distance. Danny really knows the horse. Before Chris [McCarron] retired, Danny would work him whenever Chris had to go out of town."
Came Home is scheduled to ship to Arlington Park on Wednesday, along with War Emblem."The van is to arrive at 2:30 [Wednesday morning] and leave for the airport at 3," Gonzalez said. "The plane leaves from Ontario at 5. After he gets to Arlington, I plan to jog him Thursday and gallop him Friday."
