Woodward Stakes (gr. I) winner Lido Palace, whose connections passed on paying a supplementary nomination of fee of $800,000 to compete in the Breeders' Cup Classic, won a classified allowance at Belmont Park Sunday.

John Amerman's 5-year-old Chilean-bred son of Rich Man's Gold held off Griffinite by a half-length to register his 10th career victory in the day's feature, which carried a total purse of $58,000. The time for the 1 1/8-mile race was 1:48 3/5.

Ridden by Jorge Chavez, the Bobby Frankel trainee dueled with Ground Storm through the stretch to grab the lead. It appeared that Griffinite, with Jose Santos aboard, would go on by with a strong late rush. In typical style, though, Lido Palace dug in to prevail in the closing yards.

Lido Palace has won more than $2.4 million in 22 career starts. He returned $2.50 for the victory.
