Bedanken edged Mariensky by a nose Saturday at Keeneland to win the $115,700 Valley View Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies.
Guided to the middle of the course for her rally by jockey Don Pettinger, the daughter of Geri took the lead inside the eighth pole and then held off Mariensky's determined bid. Time for 1 1/16 miles on the yielding turf course was 1:44.24.
"It was close," Pettinger said. "I had a hard time finding exactly where the wire was to see if my filly hung on or not. She kept trying and held on."
High Maintenance finished 2 ¼ lengths back in third followed, in order, by Stylelistick, Kathy K D, With Patience, Dreamers Glory, August Storm, Guana and Gilded Nip, who set a fast early pace.
It was the sixth victory in eight career starts for Bedanken, who is owned by Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stable and trained by Donnie Von Hemel. She received $71,734 for the win, increasing her career earnings to $210,884.
"I was a little surprised that we were as far back (early) as we were," said Pettinger. "In the middle of the turn she was gaining momentum and I felt good that she was going to catch those horses.
"I got a little worried at the wire there, though, just like everybody else."
The winner paid $6.80, $4 and $3.20. Mariensky, ridden by Rene Douglas, returned $3.40 and $3. High Maintenance, with Mark Guidry aboard, paid $4.20 to show.
"I think the post position (No. 9) might have made all the difference," said Douglas. "The filly ran great. Bedanken moved before us and that gave her the edge. One more jump and we would have had her."
