A week after finishing fifth in the Kentucky Cup Mile Handicap on turf at Kentucky Downs, Kimberlite Pipe returns to the races in the $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship Handicap (gr. III) Saturday at the Kentucky oval. The 1 1/8-mile main track event also features co-highweights Phil the Grip and Mt. Lemon.
Four-year-old Kimberlite Pipe began the year with two sprinting allowance wins but has been held winless since then in six races. The Dallas Stewart trainee was only beaten by 2 1/2 lengths in last week's mile turf race and switches back to the main track for the Fall Championship.
Morning-line favorite Phil the Grip is winless since taking the Kentucky Cup Classic Preview Handicap (gr. III) at Turfway Park over a year ago. The New York-bred finished second in the restricted West Point Handicap at Saratoga when last out.
The field for the Turfway Park Fall Championship Handicap – with jockeys, weights, and morning-line odds – will consist of:
1 -- Unloosened, Francisco Torres, 114, 5-1
2 -- Irish Silence, William Troilo, 113, 12-1
3 -- Coast of Mane, Willie Martinez, 110, 15-1
4 -- Glacial, Marlon St. Julien, 115, 3-1
5 -- Kimberlite Pipe, Calvin Borel, 116, 3-1
6 -- Phil the Grip, Larry Melancon, 117, 5-2
7 -- Mount Lemon, Robby Albarado, 117, 4-1
