Owned by Charles Simmons and trained by Cliff Hopmans, the son of Great Gladiator entered the race for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds with a recent win in the Kenora Stakes already under his belt. Following that effort, on Wednesday, September 25, under the lights, Mulligan The Great finished a disappointing fifth. It was a race that his trainer certainly learned from.

"We did a lot of work with him to get him accustomed to the nighttime conditions," said Hopmans. "I've always loved this horse. Last time he ran, it was also a Wednesday night, and he was a real mess, and did everything wrong. We probably schooled him 15 times, and had him running at 6 a.m., while it was still dark. He came over tonight like a veteran of night racing. He rose above my expectations. He's a tremendous talent."

The time of the seven furlong event was 1:22.96 over a main track rated fast.

Mulligan The Great, who boosted his career earnings to $271,292 with the win, returned $11.40, $6.00, $5.70 combining with Mister Coop ($6.40, $6.60) for a $58.80 exacta. Sophia's Prince ($11.30) completed the $589.80 trifecta.
